Our Story

Where fans once cheered on top-notch performances in a former hockey arena, where talented players competed for victory and the place vibrated with energy, the story of CirkArena continues and begins anew.

The new European-level research and development center for the circular economy will draw attention to Třinec, Ostrava, and the entire region, attracting new talent and excellence, and will once again vibrate with energy.

The idea of CirkArena stems from the industrial history of the region and the current transformation of the regional economy. It also directly links to European climate goals and the shift towards a low-carbon economy.

The results of CirkAreny’s research and development will support the regional innovation ecosystem. They will help to exploit the potential of secondary use of raw materials stored in the region – industrial heaps, spoil tips, and tailings ponds, which are the legacy of heavy industry. They will contribute to the modernization and sustainability of businesses in the region, reducing the amount of waste in industry, preventing waste generation, saving raw materials, and promoting industrial symbiosis. All individual research projects have a comprehensive value chain from the originator/source of the waste to its recipient.

The building itself will be a unique example of the application of circular economic principles in construction. It will be created by recycling a brown eld site – the old WerkArena in Třinec. Construction is being carried out using the Design & Build method.
