As the R&D Strategy Manager for MMV and CirkArena, Alejandro Sanz Lara is responsible for developing opportunities in global markets and building international networks and partnerships in the field of the circular economy. Since joining MMV in mid-2025, he has been successfully delivering on this mission. His achievements include establishing collaborations with universities and research partners, as well as with Europe’s largest applied research organization, Fraunhofer, and working on research projects with an international scope. What brought Alejandro to the Czech Republic, what attracted him to CirkArena, and what ambitions does he have for himself and the project?
You describe yourself as “internationally oriented,” and your impressive track record clearly reflects that. You have worked, among others, in the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, France, as well as in the United States, China and India, gaining experience in research, innovation, and both manufacturing and technology companies. Which of these experiences can be best leveraged for CirkArena?
Perhaps the most valuable aspect is the combination of a rich diversity of cultures, technical backgrounds and approaches. Across different countries, companies, industries and even in sports, it is attitude that truly makes the difference between average and success. It is a “yes, we can” mindset that enables things to actually happen. The ability to see the bigger picture while connecting the dots to create a path to success.
I see the potential to become an international powerhouse in the field of circular economy—one that attracts top talent and the best partners to collaborate with. At the same time, I see clear opportunities to further develop this potential into new, concrete and successful forms of innovation for industry in the future. I do not want to ignore the industrial past of the region, but neither do I want to remain anchored in it. I want to build on this strong foundation and use it as a solid base for creating a much better future. Moving into the future through the past.
What attracted you to CirkArena, and how do you find life in the Beskydy region and working in Ostrava?
In addition to everything already mentioned, I was also drawn to CirkArena by personal ambition. I enjoy building a leading organisation—one that stands out. And that has proven to be the case: in our interactions with top-level institutions across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia, we consistently create a “wow” effect.
On a personal level, life in the Beskydy region has been made easy by the warm welcome from the people around me. I have truly made this place my own—I go to ice hockey games at the Werk Arena, supporting my team HC Oceláři, or spend time with friends at the pub. I am part of a quiz team (Duna), competing every week. I plant potatoes with friends who have now become family. I enjoy the forests, the nature, and the endless possibilities this remarkable region has to offer.
Do you and CirkArena have a “dream” partner you would like to attract for collaboration on a project, product or research?
Yes, I would like to see CirkArena not only as a centre of excellence—partnering on equal terms with leading institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute—but also as an environment that actively supports the creation and growth of startups, both through its infrastructure and its people.
